The Keep London Growing Coalition was formed to help educate City Hall on the building industry. The coalition serves as a voice for the industry on decisions before Council that members of the Coalition believe will negatively impact London’s local economy.
What’s Happening?
- On June 29, London City Council will vote on a proposed increase in Development Charges (DC) on new homes. The DC could increase from $17,005 per single family home to $22,921 per home effective August 4, 2009.
- This increase follows a 4.1% increase already absorbed by homeowners in January 2009.
- In January 2004, development charges in London were $9,557. With the proposed increase, the new rate would be $22,921, or an increase of 140.3% over a five-year period.
- The Keep London Growing Coalition is asking Council consider a freeze in development charges to provide a stimulus to the building industry that will put people back to work.
Our concern:
- London currently has the third highest unemployment rate in Ontario at 10.2%.
- The Coalition does not oppose the passing of the DC recommendation for an increase. But given the current economic situation, we believe an increase at this time would put more jobs at risk in an already strained industry.
How You Can Help?
- Prior to the June 29 Council meeting, the KLGC will hold a rally from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on the front steps of City Hall to show Council and the community the faces of the hard working men and women who will be directly impacted if this increase is approved. Come join in the rally.
- You can also email your member of Council and ask them to vote to delay the increase for one year.
